Volunteer work at KJT
The counseling work at KJT relies on the help of volunteers. The volunteers are all specially trained counselors for the Kanner-Jugendtelefon 11611 phone helpline, the Internet helpline or the Elterentelefon telephone helpline. They also support counseling at the BEE SECURE helpline.
How can I become a KJT volunteer counselor?
All volunteers participate in a basic training. The basic training consists of 70 hours and about 50 hours practical training.
The Basic Training is based on three pillars of support:
- Basic counseling attitudes and conversational skills.
- Psychological and educational knowledge comprising
Developmental psychology of childhood and adolescence, family structures and family dynamics, divorce, sexuality, drug addiction, mental health, family violence, sexual violence against children, etc .;
- Knowledge of counseling and support services in Luxembourg.
The internship takes place in two phases. In the first phase, the interns assist experienced counselors and listen to counseling sessions; in the second phase, they conduct their own counseling sessions under the guidance of a mentor.
What is required of a volunteer counselor?
As a trained volunteer, one commits to two counseling sessions per month (one session lasts between 2 and 3 hours). Each member of the volunteer group is required to attend a supervised session once a month (maximum duration of 3 hours). In addition, each staff member participates in at least one continuing education and one thematic evening per year. Supervision and continuous training guarantee the quality of the counselor’s work.
When will the next basic training take place?
We organize a new basic training about every two years. The next one will take place at the beginning of 2022. Before each session, we invite the volunteers for an evening of information.
What happens after I complete the basic training?
After you completed the basic training, you become an active volunteer of the 1 1 16 1 1 1 Kanner-Jugendtelefon service. You become part of the nice team of interesting and friendly counsellors of the KJT. You can then register for working sessions according to your availability, as well as for a supervision group that suits you. Monthly supervision is used for critical reflection upon, counseling work, improvement of counseling skills, mental hygiene, quality assurance of counseling work, and improvement of skills.
After the training, volunteers are required to participate in continuing education seminars and thematic sessions taking place regularly. They help in developing counseling skills as well as broaden and deepen knowledge in all fields of protection, health and well-being of children and young people.
For information, here is the 2020 training program.
After 3 years of experience, if they wish, our volunteer counselors can undergo further training to become an Internet counselor or a Telephone counselor for parents.
